1. Product Overview

ARALDITE® AV 4738 / HARDENER HV 4739 is a two-component, ambient temperature curing epoxy adhesive in paste form. It provides strong, durable bonds with temperature resistance up to 150°C after post-curing. The adhesive demonstrates excellent chemical resistance, good gap-filling capability, and non-flowing properties for ease of application. It is suitable for bonding metals and reinforced polymer composites, including GRE, GRP, ABS, and SMC. Performance is further enhanced by post-curing, and the product has potential certification for potable water applications.

2. Applications

  • Structural bonding of metals and reinforced composites (GRE, GRP, SMC, ABS)

  • Pipe bonding and plumbing applications

  • Joints requiring high chemical and temperature resistance

  • Applications requiring gap filling and non-flowing adhesives

  • Ambient curing with optional post-cure for optimum performance

Surface Pretreatment: Clean surfaces with acetone or other degreasing agents. Avoid low-grade alcohols, gasoline, or paint thinners. For best results, mechanically abrade or chemically etch surfaces, followed by a second degreasing.

Application:

  • Mix resin and hardener (weight ratio 100:25–27.5).

  • Apply with spatula to pretreated surfaces and clamp immediately.

  • Achieves minimum shear strength at 23°C: 1 MPa in 3 hours, 10 MPa in 4 hours.

  • Post-cure recommended for optimum properties: e.g., 2 hours at 80°C or 1 hour at 120°C.

3. Typical Properties

Property Value Unit Condition
Mix Ratio 0.25–0.275 % (W) Hardener : Resin
Density ~1.6 g/cm³ at 25°C
Gel Time 40–50 min at 40°C
Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) 120 °C Post-cured
Lap Shear Strength ≥10 MPa at 23°C
Viscosity 40–50 Pa·s at 25°C
Appearance Grey Paste

Cured Joint Performance:

  • Metal-to-metal, plastic-to-plastic, and composite-to-composite joints achieve strong lap shear strengths after ambient cure + post-cure.

  • Roller peel strength on aluminium: 2.6 N/mm (7 days at 23°C), 4.6 N/mm (+80°C, 1h), 5.6 N/mm (+125°C, 1h).

  • Good resistance to water immersion, tropical weathering, and various chemicals.
