1. Product Overview

Araldite® AV 4738 with Hardener HV 4739 is a two-component epoxy paste adhesive designed for structural bonding of metals and composites. It cures at ambient temperature and can be post-cured to enhance mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and temperature resistance (up to 150 °C). The adhesive is a non-flowing, gap-filling paste suitable for both manual and mechanical application.

2. Applications

  • Bonding metals and reinforced composites such as GRP, GRE, ABS, SMC.

  • Composite pipe bonding.

  • High-strength structural joints requiring chemical resistance.

  • Situations requiring gap filling and non-sag application.

  • Potable water applications (KIWA approval filed).

3. Typical Properties

Before Mixing

Component Appearance Density (g/cm³) Viscosity (25 °C)
Araldite® AV 4738 (Resin) Light grey thixotropic paste 1.45 – 1.55 500 – 800 Pa·s
Hardener HV 4739 Pale grey thixotropic paste 1.75 – 1.85 34 – 64 Pa·s
Mixed adhesive Grey paste ~1.6

Mixing Ratio:

  • By weight → 100 : 25–27.5

  • By volume → 100 : 22–23

(100:27.5 by weight increases glass transition temperature slightly)

Mixed System / Processing Data

Property Condition Value
Pot life 100 g at 25 °C 40 – 50 min
Gel time 40 °C 40 – 50 min
Lap shear strength on aluminium 23 °C, 24h cure > 10 MPa
Glass transition temperature (Tg ½) ≥ 120 °C
Minimum shear strength 25 °C cure, 3h > 1 N/mm²
Minimum shear strength 60 °C cure, 15 min > 1 N/mm²

Curing Schedules:

  • Ambient cure: good performance after 24h at 23 °C.

  • Recommended post-cure: 2 h at 80 °C or 1 h at 120 °C (or in-service post-cure).

Cured Properties (typical values)

Property Condition Value
Lap shear strength (metals, ISO 4587) Al, Steel, Stainless Steel, Cu, Brass 15 – 25 N/mm²
Lap shear strength (plastics, ISO 4587) PVC, Acrylic, ABS, SMC, PC 5 – 10 N/mm²
Roller peel test (ISO 4578) Al, 7d cure + post-cure 2.6 – 5.6 N/mm
Lap shear vs. temperature 23–120 °C 8 – 18 N/mm²
Lap shear after chemical immersion (90 days at 23 °C) Water, acids, oils, methanol, etc. 5 – 15 N/mm² (depending on medium)
Lap shear vs. tropical weathering (90 days) Retains ~70–80% strength
Lap shear vs. water immersion (GRE substrates) Up to 2000 h at 23 °C–100 °C Maintains good adhesion
